Sunday Reflection: The Thread of Care Between Storytelling and Nursing
In this post, I reflect on the bridge between my life as a nurse and my calling as a storyteller. I’ve realized that wherever I find myself, the common thread is care. Join me as I explore how our overlooked experiences are actually seeds for aha moments, and how storytelling helps us rediscover the profound connectedness of our shared human journey.

Sunday Reflection: The Thread of Care Between Storytelling and Nursing
Today, I want to reflect on what I believe is the reason I was born. I believe I was born to tell stories, and everywhere life has taken me, there’s always been a story. I see a story in everything, and I have several short stories that I intend to share if grace abounds. These stories were produced out of the entire journey of my life.
At work, I saw stories.
At church, I saw stories.
Raising my son, there were stories.
Travelling adds flavor and new perspectives to my stories.
In last Sunday’s blog post, I spoke about the disconnect we often feel between our daily responsibilities and our true calling. To some degree, that tension exists because we aren't always doing the thing that feels like breathing to us. But as I look back, I’ve realized that for me, there is a common thread that bridged the gap.
In my case, the common thread between my stories and my nursing career is caring. As nurses, our career is built on Watson’s model of caring.
In every story that I tell, my goal is the same:
I want to enlighten somebody’s journey.
I want to expose an aha moment, offering a perspective that might never have been considered.
I want to draw attention to the experiences we often overlook because we were too busy doing other things.
The experiences in our lives that we don't pay attention to are really seeds. I’ve heard from readers of Tree Story who told me how the book reconnected them to a specific tree or a memory they had long forgotten. They’ll say, "Wow, I never thought about it like that," but there is profound life in trees—just as there are in our own overlooked moments.
Ultimately, everything I do comes from a desire for connectedness. I want to strengthen the bond between us as humans as we experience this life and the world we live in together. We need each other, and the forces that seek to disconnect us are also seeds that go unnoticed until that aha moment.
